The Dalian Wanda Group announced last month that they are investing nearly $6 billion to build a cultural tourism city in Wuxi – an area just outside of Shanghai. The nearly 300 acre facility has been dubbed Wuxi Wanda City and will surround a lake. The areas will include a movie theme park, indoor children’s theme park and an outdoor theme park for all ages.

Wanda’s chairman Wang Jianlin said, “Wuxi Wanda City will have richer content than Disney” and that they expect to play host to “20 million tourists a year.” Wang then boasted, “Wanda has confidence that [we] will surpass Disney in both revenue and number of visitors.”

That’s a pretty big boast and makes me wonder if they are speaking to Disney’s new installation in Shanghai or Disney at large. Either way, it’s not a trifling challenge. In addition to the three theme parks, Wanda announced the Wuxi site will also include seven resort hotels, 200 retail shops and a strip of more than 20 bars. Also of interest is a proposed extreme sports hall which promises to offer car-racing, surfing and zip-lining.

The first part of Wanda’s mega-park is slated to open in 2016, a year after Disney will open its doors in Shanghai. By contrast, the Disney facility will have one main park, two themed hotels, shopping, dining and other recreational offerings. If Wanda’s plans come to fruition, they’ll slay Disney on scope alone, but for most theme park fans, Disney has a corner on the market in design magic.

What’s a matter of curiosity as well is what content Wanda will feature in their theme park. Disney has a vault of famous videos to choose from – parks like Universal also have a trove of cinematic treasures to plunder for attraction and ride ideas. But Wanda? They own a large chain of hotels, cinemas and karaoke bars. They have invested billions in a new movie and TV studio they’re building in China, but that’s future, not existing content… So where will the creative inspiration for their rides and attractions come from?

It’s one thing to say you’re going to take on the Disney machine and it’s quite another to deliver. Is this posturing or is there a solid plan in place? And if so, when will we get to see it? Wanda Media has recently begun investing in film production and has fingers in the costume drama The Palace, Keanu Reeves directed Man of Tai Chi, Jackie Chan’s Police Story 2013 and The Monkey King: Uproar in Heaven 3D starring Chow Yun-fat. That’s a good start, but is far from a park’s worth of material (much less three).

Judging from the high-level concept art prepared by planning and design firm Forrec, the park’s elements look to be drawn from nature and regional culture moreso than any entertainment-based theme concept. The art is gorgeous, if fantastical, and one has to wonder if it’s feasible. If constructed as drawn, it would truly be something like we’ve never seen in a theme park and could well rival the House of Mouse. We look forward to updates once plans are finalized and construction is underway.
