The LEGO House

If one brand has captured the imaginations of people who love to play, young and old alike, it’s LEGO. The company’s uniquely colorful stacked blocks have evolved into sophisticated kits with theming and expansive hotels offering wonderfully kid-centric experiences. The latest addition to the LEGO universe is LEGO House, an interactive visitor center slated to open in 2016 in the Danish town of Billund.

The LEGO Group and LEGO Foundation selected an architectural firm, Bjarke Ingles Group (BIG), to lead the design and construction. BIG has been the force behind a number of creative European designs in recent years, including the Danish Maritime Museum. The design concept of LEGO House makes it look as though the building is constructed of LEGO bricks.  It will feature both functional and exhibition space. LEGO has called the project an “experience center.”

LEGO’s owner offers some insight into what’s driving the project. Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen says, “The LEGO House will show the past, present and future of the LEGO idea and I am certain it will be a fantastic place, where LEGO fans of all ages will get a wide range of unique LEGO experiences. It is our belief that LEGO play fosters innovative thinking, and the LEGO House gives us an opportunity to make it very tangible what LEGO play offers and how it stimulates children’s creativity and learning.”

The design team has taken this perspective to heart when developing the actual concept designs. “It is our wish that the LEGO House is used by both visitors and the citizens of Billund; the birthplace and home town of the LEGO Group. For this reason a large part of the building – 1,900 square meters – will be a covered square with free access for the public, and we hope it will be a natural gathering point for people living in Billund as well as visitors. We do not know what specific activities will be in the house,” says designer Hans Peter Folmann.

Upon completion, the center will be nearly 82,000 square feet and include a café, branded store, public square, and exhibition areas. The design concepts also include multiple levels of roof space with different rooftop gardens.

There’s no question that LEGO House will be a celebration of this important Danish brand. We’re interested to see how the exhibition space will be put to use, and ultimately how interactive the approach will be. There’s tremendous potential for exhibits that explore the history of LEGO, use the blocks to teach STEM concepts to children, include interactive technology, and tons of opportunity for hands-on play. We look forward to seeing how BIG and LEGO take this project beyond a basic exhibit space, and into “experience center” territory.
