The Force is about to grow stronger at US-based Disney theme parks and resorts. In a recent earnings call, Walt Disney Company’s Chief Executive Officer Bob Iger announced that Disney has plans to expand their Star Wars presence. After a 2013 budget reallocation forced Imagineers to stop work on planned Star Wars attractions in the Anaheim, CA and Orlando, FL parks, the news of the expansion is an exciting development for Disney and Star Wars fans alike. Plans for the new Star Wars themed attractions remain under wraps until next year, but the announcement comes on the heels of the Disney’s complete acquisition of George Lucas’ popular LucasFilm franchise. The company announced that they would be purchasing LucasFilm for $4.05 billion at the end of 2012.

Currently, there is a somewhat limited Star Wars presence at Disney parks. Fans of the popular films can check out the Star Tours – The Adventure Continues attraction, as well as a handful of special events. Disney’s Imagineers revamped the iconic Star Tours simulator ride at the Orlando and Anaheim parks in 2011, opening up a 3-D version of the decades-old attraction with upgraded special effects. Disney’s Hollywood Studios also offers some exclusive events during their annual Star Wars Weekends series, including a  Jedi Training Academy geared towards young guests. The Weekends also feature meet and greet opportunities with stars from the popular films.

Disney also recently announced that there’s a new Star Wars film on the docket for late 2015. Star Wars: Episode VII will be directed by J.J. Abrams, who is best known for his work on the Star Trek films and the popular sci-fi television series Fringe and Lost. It is rumored that Episode VII will serve as a follow up to the George Lucas classic Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi, with a plot focused on popular characters Han, Leia, and Luke from the original movie trilogy. Though no official announcements have been made about casting, many are speculating that we may be seeing Mark Hamil, Carrie Fisher, and Harrison Ford reunite on the big screen on December 18, 2015.

It will be interesting to see how Disney incorporates more Star Wars themed attractions into their parks and resorts, particularly around the release of the new film. In recent years, new themed attractions like Cars Radiator Springs Racers and the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train have been a huge draw to Hollywood Studios and Magic Kingdom. The Star Wars films immense fan base represents a major opportunity for the Disney brand. At the right scale, it’s possible that a major attraction or themed area could help draw in guests on the scale of Universal’s popular Harry Potter attractions. But we’ll have to wait until next year to see what the Imagineers have up their sleeves in terms of new Star Wars attractions. During last week’s earnings call, Iger simply stated that, “When we grow ‘Star Wars’ presence, which we will do significantly, you will see better bets being made that will pay off for us than were made in the past.”

We’ll keep you updated on what’s in store for Star Wars at Disney. Until then, may the Force be with you.
